Terms of Use
The rules for using the Sprout iOS app, plant catalog, care plans, plant-identification tools, weather experiences, reminders and AI-powered features.
Effective and last updated 5 September 2026
01 Agreement and scope
These Terms of Use (“Terms”) govern your access to and use of the Sprout iOS application, related website, plant catalog, care engine, plant-identification tools, weather experiences, reminders, AI-powered features and any related services we make available (collectively, the “Services”).
The Services are provided by Sprout (“Sprout,” “we,” “us” or “our”). By downloading, accessing or using the Services, you agree to these Terms and our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not use the Services.
If you download Sprout through Apple’s App Store, your use of the iOS application is also subject to Apple’s applicable usage rules and the Apple Licensed Application End User License Agreement, except where a valid custom end-user licence agreement applies.
02 Eligibility
You must be at least 18 years old and legally capable of entering into a binding agreement to use the Services. Sprout is not directed to children.
If the law where you live requires a higher minimum age, parental consent or another legal basis, you may use the Services only after those requirements have been satisfied. You may not use the Services if applicable law prohibits you from doing so.
03 What Sprout provides
Sprout is a plant-tracking and educational experience. Depending on your device, permissions, region and the version of the Services, Sprout may allow you to:
- add and track supported indoor plant species;
- view simulated growth, lifecycle stages, health and care milestones;
- receive profile-based care tasks and optional local reminders;
- use local weather to change the in-app environment;
- photograph an existing plant for catalog matching and estimated growth-stage setup;
- receive short AI-generated plant stories, daily summaries or playful plant conversations; and
- create and share visual moments and on-device growth videos from your garden.
Features may be experimental, unavailable or different across devices, operating-system versions, languages and regions. Apple Intelligence features require a compatible Apple device, supported software, an available model and a supported language. When an intelligent feature is unavailable, Sprout may use a non-generative fallback or hide the feature.
04 Plant-care information and safety
Sprout provides general educational information, simulations and reminders. It does not provide professional horticultural, agricultural, veterinary, medical, toxicology, pest-control or emergency advice.
Plant growth and health vary according to species, cultivar, maturity, climate, light, soil, drainage, water quality, pests, disease and many other factors. Timelines, growth stages, health scores, animations, reminders and care suggestions are estimates and game-calibrated models, not guarantees. Sprout cannot see or measure conditions that you have not supplied to the Services.
You are responsible for checking the actual plant and soil before acting. Do not water, fertilise, repot, prune, apply chemicals or change a plant’s environment solely because of a notification or generated message. Follow product labels and seek advice from an appropriately qualified local professional where necessary.
Some plants may be toxic, irritating or unsafe for people or animals. Keep plants, soil, fertilisers, pesticides and tools away from children and pets as appropriate. Verify toxicity and handling information with a reliable local authority or veterinary professional. If a person or animal may have been poisoned or injured, contact local emergency, poison-control or veterinary services immediately.
05 Plant identification and photo analysis
Plant scanning attempts to match a photograph with Sprout’s limited supported catalog and estimate a broad starting stage. It is not a botanical identification service, health diagnosis or safety assessment. Similar-looking species may be confused, images may be unclear and results may be incomplete or incorrect. Always confirm an identification before relying on it, especially before ingestion, handling, treatment or placement near children or animals.
Where supported, Sprout first attempts on-device analysis. If that analysis is unavailable or uncertain, Sprout will not send the photograph to a cloud provider unless you separately allow external photo analysis. You can instead choose a species and stage manually.
Do not upload photographs containing people, faces, private documents, addresses, confidential information, unlawful material or content you do not have the right to use.
06 AI-generated experiences
Some features use Apple Intelligence on the device. With your separate permission, limited features may use Google Gemini as a cloud fallback for plant matching and personalized wording. The deterministic species profile and care engine—not an AI model—determine which care tasks are due. AI output can be inaccurate, incomplete, repetitive or unexpected and may not reflect the current condition of your plant.
AI-generated plant speech is fictional personification for entertainment. A plant is not conscious, is not listening to you and does not have feelings, intentions or knowledge of unseen conditions. Generated content must not be treated as professional advice or as a replacement for the profile-based care engine.
You must not attempt to bypass safety controls, extract models or system instructions, interfere with a provider, submit unlawful or rights-infringing content, or use an AI feature to harm, deceive, harass or exploit another person.
07 Weather and location
Local weather is optional. If you enable it and grant location permission, Sprout requests low-accuracy location and rounds latitude and longitude before requesting current conditions from Open-Meteo. Sprout may store recent weather information, your weather preference and rounded coordinates in your private Sprout account to reduce repeated requests and keep your settings consistent.
Weather information may be delayed, unavailable or inaccurate. It changes the visual environment and may provide context, but it is not an emergency, severe-weather or safety-warning service. Use official local sources for weather warnings and safety decisions.
If live weather cannot be loaded, Sprout may show cached conditions or a calm fallback environment.
08 Reminders and lifecycle timing
Care reminders are optional and require notification permission. Delivery depends on your device settings, battery state, Focus modes, operating system and other conditions outside our control. Notifications may arrive late or not at all.
Lifecycle counters, missed-day reconciliation and care schedules are planning tools. You remain responsible for observing your plants and deciding whether a task is appropriate. Sprout does not guarantee continuous background execution, uninterrupted timers or the survival, growth, flowering or condition of any plant.
09 Your content and cloud plant records
You retain ownership of plant names, photos, journal entries, voice input and other content you provide (“User Content”). You give us a limited, non-exclusive licence to process User Content only as reasonably necessary to operate, secure and improve the feature you chose, subject to our Privacy Policy and your permissions.
You represent that you have the rights needed to provide User Content and that it does not violate any law or another person’s rights.
Sprout stores core garden records, preferences and private growth photos in a Supabase-backed cloud account so your garden can continue across your signed-in Apple devices. The application may keep temporary caches, session credentials and pending changes on a device as needed to operate. Deleting the application does not delete your cloud account or its records; use Sprout’s data controls to export or permanently delete them. Do not rely on Sprout as the sole copy of information that is important to you.
When you choose to export a growth video, Sprout temporarily downloads the selected private growth photos and creates an MP4 on your iPhone. The temporary export is removed after the iOS share sheet finishes. A copy leaves Sprout only when you choose a destination in that share sheet; the destination’s own terms and privacy practices then apply.
10 Acceptable use
You may use the Services only for lawful, personal purposes and in accordance with these Terms. You must not:
- copy, sell, sublicense, rent or commercially exploit the Services except where applicable law permits;
- reverse engineer, decompile or attempt to derive source code, models or private interfaces except where the law expressly allows it;
- probe, disrupt, overload, bypass or compromise the security or operation of the Services or a connected provider;
- use automated systems to scrape, extract or send excessive requests;
- upload malicious code or content that is illegal, deceptive, abusive, invasive of privacy or infringing;
- impersonate another person or misrepresent an identification or AI output as verified professional advice; or
- use the Services in a way that could harm Sprout, Apple, a service provider, another user or any third party.
11 Licence and ownership
The Sprout application is licensed, not sold. Subject to these Terms, we grant you a limited, personal, revocable, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to use Sprout on Apple-branded products that you own or control, as permitted by Apple’s usage rules. Family Sharing or similar access may apply only where Apple permits it.
Sprout, including its software, plant DNA systems, illustrations, animations, interfaces, text, catalog structure, branding and other materials, is owned by us or our licensors and is protected by intellectual-property laws. Except for the limited licence above, no right, title or interest is transferred to you.
Open-source components and third-party materials remain subject to their own licences and notices.
12 Third-party services
The Services may depend on Apple frameworks and services, Supabase, OneSignal, Open-Meteo, Google Gemini and other third-party products. Their availability, accuracy and operation are outside our control, and their own terms and privacy notices may apply. Relevant terms include:
- Apple Licensed Application End User License Agreement;
- Open-Meteo Terms and Privacy; and
- Gemini API Additional Terms;
- Supabase Privacy Policy; and
- OneSignal Privacy Policy.
Third-party services may change, suspend or discontinue functionality. We may replace, restrict or remove an integration where necessary for safety, compliance, reliability or product operation.
13 Paid features and subscriptions
Sprout may introduce paid downloads, one-time purchases or automatically renewing subscriptions in the future. Before any purchase, the App Store will show the price, billing period, trial terms and included features.
Purchases made through Apple are processed by Apple and are subject to Apple’s payment, cancellation and refund rules. Unless the App Store states otherwise, an automatically renewing subscription renews until you cancel it through your Apple Account settings. Deleting the application does not cancel a subscription.
We may change future subscription prices or features in accordance with applicable law and Apple’s requirements. Nothing in this section creates a promise that any paid feature or subscription will be offered.
14 Service changes and availability
We may update, add, remove, limit or discontinue features. We may release changes needed for security, legal compliance, compatibility or reliability. We do not promise that the Services will always be available, error-free or compatible with every device or operating-system version.
We may suspend or terminate your access if you materially violate these Terms, misuse the Services or create a security or legal risk. You may stop using the Services at any time by deleting the application and, where applicable, cancelling paid services separately.
15 Disclaimers
To the maximum extent permitted by law, the Services are provided “as is” and “as available.” We disclaim all warranties and conditions, express, implied or statutory, including merchantability, satisfactory quality, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, availability, quiet enjoyment and non-infringement.
We do not warrant that plant identification, care guidance, lifecycle simulation, AI output, weather data, notifications or other content will be accurate, complete, timely or suitable for your circumstances. Nothing in these Terms excludes warranties or consumer rights that cannot lawfully be excluded.
16 Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, Sprout and its owners, personnel and licensors will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary or punitive loss, including plant loss, property damage, loss of data, loss of profits, business interruption or costs arising from your use of or inability to use the Services.
To the maximum extent permitted by law, our total aggregate liability relating to the Services will not exceed the greater of (a) the amount you paid for the Services during the twelve months before the event giving rise to the claim or (b) US$50.
These limitations do not apply where liability cannot legally be limited, including where applicable for fraud, wilful misconduct, death or personal injury caused by negligence, or mandatory consumer rights.
17 Apple-specific terms
You and Sprout acknowledge that these Terms are between you and Sprout, not Apple. Sprout, not Apple, is solely responsible for the application and its content.
Apple has no obligation to provide maintenance or support for Sprout. To the extent any warranty applies and Sprout fails to conform to it, you may notify Apple, and Apple may refund the purchase price paid for the application, if any, as required by Apple’s rules. To the maximum extent permitted by law, Apple has no other warranty obligation.
Sprout, not Apple, is responsible for addressing claims relating to the application, including product-liability claims, regulatory claims, consumer-protection claims and claims that the application infringes a third party’s intellectual-property rights.
You represent that you are not located in a country subject to a United States government embargo or designated as supporting terrorism and that you are not listed on a United States government prohibited or restricted party list.
You must comply with applicable third-party agreement terms when using Sprout. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these Terms and may enforce the Apple-specific provisions against you after you accept them.
18 Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms to reflect changes to the Services, providers, law or safety requirements. We will change the “last updated” date and provide additional notice where required by law. Changes apply prospectively from their stated effective date. If you do not agree to updated Terms, stop using the Services.
19 General terms
If any provision is found unenforceable, the remaining provisions remain effective. A failure to enforce a provision is not a waiver. You may not assign these Terms without our consent; we may assign them as part of a merger, acquisition, restructuring or transfer of the Services, subject to applicable law.
These Terms, the Privacy Policy, applicable purchase terms and any mandatory App Store terms form the entire agreement concerning the Services and replace earlier agreements on the same subject.
